Thank you so much for sharing valuable information. I have been doing a lot of research as I want to make a specific piece of sterling jewelry and your article was so helpful to me. Getting started is a bit overwhelming...learning what I need to buy, and how to accomplish the end result. Thanks too on tips on where to buy things that I'll need.

Did you know that chalk will also retard tarnishing? Grab a box of common blackboard chalk and pop some inside those baggies. Your silver wire (and silver jewelry too) will last a whole lot longer!

Hi,

I recently bought a coil of 22 guage half hard wire, one in Sterling silver and one in 14K gold-filled to explore wire wrapping.

Since you have worked with wires a lot, I wanted to ask if you know a flush cutter that says that it will cut up to 1.3mm copper wire is going to work on my new wires?

If it works, that saves me from buying a new tool! Thanks!

Shalom,

Susan

Read your posting about SS wire and argentium wire....I have been working with SS wire for a few years and switched to Argentium SS wire within the last year because of the tarnishing effects on the SS...I have not been as happy as i would like with the Argentium SS wire...Although, it is said it does not tarnish, it does get a darker color silver over time and i don't think it even brightens as much as the SS when cleaned...Overall, i haven't been as pleased with it as i thought i would be...I have never worked with FINE SS but appreciate you experience with it...

Hi Doby, Argentium does get dirty and need to be cleaned even though the manufacturer says it doesn't - at least, that has been my experience with it, not terribly dirty but definitely can be shined up with a cleaning cloth. When I wrote this article a couple years ago, I had full intentions of switching my stock to Argentium but when I saw that it does get dirty, I did not change out my stock. I have never tried Silver Black or LOS on it because I believe that is the entire point of the wire - to keep it from tarnishing but who knows? It might work! If you try it, please post about your findings - it would be interesting to know what you discovered :) And fine silver, if left exposed to air, gets very tarnished/dirty.

Thank you for the great article.

So if one wants to patina a piece, the only option would be SS wire?!?
